House. 1703, extended c1908 by A N Prentice, and subsequently by Guy
Pemberton. Limestone ashlar and snecked rubble with stone slate roof. Two
storeys with attic. Original house of three bays, with drip course and 2-light
rebated and chamfered mullioned windows. The three hipped dormers have ball
finials. The door, in the middle bay, has a cyma-moulded surround. Above is
a plaque inscribed: "HBW 1703" and a Phoenix fire insurance plaque. Gables
coped with chimneys. To each side there is a slightly lower bay added by
Prentice. The first floor windows are partly within gables. The windows
are of four lights except for the first floor one at the left, which is of
three lights. The right-hand gable is coped and has a weathervane. At the
right is a single-storey link canted bay to join the main house to a former
barn. This was added by Pemberton and has a 3-light mullioned window flanked
by oval windows and has a door at the left with cyma surround. The gable of
the barn, at the right, is half-hipped and has a window of five Tudor-arched
lights with two transoms. The former barn doorway, in the west wall and
visible at the rear of the house, has been filled by a bay window with curved
sides. Above is a gable with lunette. Interior: both ground floor rooms of
original house have chamfered spine beams. The left hand room has exposed
common joists. The stair has a closed string and turned balusters. The
former barn has a moulded stone fireplace with canted head. It is open to
the roof and has tie-beam trusses with collars and struts, partly renewed in
softwood.
