2 dry docks including C19 sheds. c.1761. John Gilbert and
James Brindley engineers for the 3rd Duke of Bridgewater.
Hammer-dressed stone retaining walls, wood sluice gates,
timber and iron sheds. The walls have been heightened in
concrete and incorporate steps. Bow-string roof trusses on
iron posts. Open sides. Built for barge-building and repair.
Possibly the earliest extant example of dry docks associated
with canals. A third dock has long been filled in.
