Description

SK 80 SE MANTON PRIORY ROAD (South side)

Manor Farmhouse

GV II

Farmhouse, gable end to street, dated with inscription "Thomas Brown founder
and builder of this house only by the help of God as saith the prophit David
except the land build the house they labour in vain that build it. Anno
Dom 1583", in a cartouche over the door. If this is the original date,
the building has been modified since, but still represents an early
vernacular farmhouse. Coursed rubble with squared bands. Thatched roof.
2 storeys, 2 units with a lower unit which may have been a separate dwelling.
Left of the door, a 16-light sash, and a small chamfered stone window to
ground floor. Horizontal sliding sash above. Doorway beneath heavy lintel.
Inner lintel a roughly shaped 4 centred arch. Fire window right of door,
and a canted stone bay window, a shallow projection, capped with stone, but
now containing renewed wood casements. 24-light sash window above. Small
cellar light beyond, and then the lower roofed additional bay, though with
continuous walling: door with overlight, and chamfered timber lintel, and
24-light sash beyond it. Angle quoins are in a slightly projecting pilaster.
2 axial and 2 gable stacks, of stone and brick. Some C18 panelling in lower
through-passage within.
