Early C19 street facade conceals a C17 house with a rear wing which is basically
a timber-framed open hall of medieval origin and of cruck construction. 3 pairs
of crucks remain inside (the eastern pair mutilated, smoke blackening on the 2nd
pair). Street facade faced with stucco grooved to simulate masonry. Rusticated
quoins and small parapet. Steeply pitched slate roof. 2 ½ storeys with 2 dormers.
3 windows with moulded and shouldered architraves, pulvinated friezes and segmental
pediments. Modern ground floor shop windows but with ornamental frieze and modillion
cornice. This is the only remaining example of a hall house known to survive in
the town itself. Ref.V.C.H.
