8/402 Toghill Farmhouse

Farmhouse. Mid C17, remodelled and rear wing added C19, with C20 alterations and
additions. Limestone rubble, stone dressings, rendered, slate roofs with raised
coped verges and gable stacks. Probably originally through passage plan,
symmetrical front, rear wing forms L-plan. 2½ storeys and 3 windows, all C20,
ground floor has 2 windows with hood mould, central 2-storey gabled porch has fine
inner door, studded with raised fillets, moulded and stopped frame, glass
insertion, first floor of porch has 2-light casement of C17 with stone ovolo
mullion and hood mould, 2 gables rising to ridge height each with window and finial.
Left return has window at ground and first floor right, 2-storey rear wing has
window at ground floor left. Right return has attached single storey outhouse,
not rendered, with door and window to each side. Rear has single storey
sheltered area walled in, along rear of house and inner side of wing, 2 doors and
2 C20 windows, first floor of rear wing has C19 2-light casement under eaves and
C20 window. Interior: C19 straight stair in rear wing, landing giving access to
front and rear of house; former external rear wall very thick. Rest of interior
not inspected.
