Originally called New House. The present building which replaced an older
house, was begun by William Mitford in 1760 and completed by his son, William
Mitford, in 1794. Architect John Upton, Surveyor to the Earl of Egremont. The
main front faces east and dates from 1760. 2 storeys, basement and attic. 7
windows, 2 dormers. Ashlar, the ground floor rusticated with stringcourse over.
The 3 centre window bays project with pediment over containing a lunette window
set in plume ornamentation. Balustraded parapet above the side portions.
Hipped slate roof. Glazing bars intact. Central doorway with curved pediment
on console brackets. Of the south front probably only the east window bay dates
from 1760 and the remainder from 1790, when the north front was added. 5 win-
dows 4 dormers. Pilasters flank the front. C19 verandah on ground floor. The
north front dates from 1790. 5 windows. The 3 centre window bays project and
are carried up an extra storey with solid parapet over. Central porch. On the
north side is a C19 ground floor addition with balustraded parapet over.
