House, formerly Manor house. C14 with C15 and C16 additions,
restored and further enlarged in C19. Stone rubble with tiled
roof and casement windows. 2 storeys, 3 windows facing east
and 3 windows facing west. Original L-shaped building built by
John de Langford Constable of Carisbrooke Castle and Warden of
the Isle of Wight in the C14. It consisted of a hall and
undercroft and comprises the south and west wings of the
present building. The hall was subdivided and the undercroft
converted into a kitchen in the C16. The former hall still
retains original lancet windows at 1st floor level on east and
west walls and tall C14 2-light painted window in the gable of
the north front probably divided by a transom when ceiling was
inserted into the hall. In the centre of the east front is a
gabled projection which was added by Thomas de Langham in the
C15 to contain the staircase and extended eastwards by Richard
Worsley in the C16. In the angle of the original L on the west
side is a C19 porch. To the west of the original west wing and
slightly recessed is another C19 addition. Interior includes
staircase with solid core and arched doorcase. Kitchen with 4
centred arched stone fireplaces. 1st floor bedroom with 4
centred arched stone fireplace with high stops and cambered
painted stone fireplace of c.1662 to lounge with arched
openings on each side, the left hand one filled in with
greadoven and the central arch with early to mid C19 fireplace
with paterae and recessed decoration. Reroofed in C19.
