27/09/72 Blast Furnace

Blast furnace. 1790-1801. Brick. Built against slope to
facilitate charging, with battered lower walls and raking top.
Splayed archway to tapping hole, with square fire chamber of
stone gathered into funnel-shaped shaft. Built by Thomas
Kynnersley, and steam-powered. Steam engine taken out of use
in 1833, the casting house converted to cottages (now
demolished) in 1834.
