Large red brick mansion with stone dressings, built in the Jacobean style
by Robert Armstrong in 1871. The house stands back some 300 m to the north
of the road and is approached by a drive. Partly 3 storeys and partly 2
storeys and attics. The south front is symmetrical with 1:2:1:2:1 window
range, the outer and centre parts, of one window range, project slightly
with Dutch gables. The main block has 2 dormers with smaller Dutch gables
and a balustraded parapet above a cornice. The windows are stone mullioned
and transomed casements with stone dressings. At the east and west ends
there are 2 storeyed canted bays with open work parapets. To the east of
the main block there is a single storeyed wing with semi-circular headed
windows and end gables with central semi-circular headed windows flanked
by circular openings and surmounted by semi-circular pediments. This block
is linked to the main block by an arcade of semi-circular arches, with pilasters,
cornice and a pierced ornamental parapet. There is also a small tower with
a pyramid roof. The north and west fronts are of similar design to the
south and on the north front there is a semi-circular arched central doorway
with an oriel bay window above. Roofs slate, with many tall chimney stacks
with multiple octagonal shafts.
