MARLBOROUGH ROAD 1. 1577 SZ 69 SW 8/108 No 14 (St John's Cottage) No 16 (St John's Farm Lodge) (Formely listed under MARLBOROUGH STREET) II

House, formerly farmhouse now subdivided. Late 16th or early 17th century cross passage house altered in late 18th, mid 19th and 20th century. Built of stone rubble with red brick dressings with brick chimney stacks and tiled roof 1½ storeys L-shaped. No. 14 has to front elevation 3 hipped dormers and 2 cambered casements with leaded lights. Early 19th century 6 panelled door with top 2 panels glazed 20th century curved weather hood. South gable is of ashlar with coping, 1 kneeler and blocked in stone mullion and one metal framed casement. North gable has rendered gable with wattle and daub and stone rubble below. 20th century casement window and 19th century door. The west front has early 19th century gabled brick dormer with 16 pane sash, 1 late 19th century gabled dormer with 2 cambered sashes without glazing bars and two 20th century small hipped dormers. Ground floor has 20th century metal framed casement to left, central late 19th century 3 light casement and 20th century French window . Deep plinth. Parlour has 4 centred stone fireplace with elongated spandrels and probable spice cupboard at side. Spine beam with 2½ inch chamfer and lamb's tongue stops. Floor joists are chamfered. Partition wall has square framing.4 panelled door with L hinges.

Dining room has late 16th or early 17th century moulded wooden doorcase surround. Kitchen has 3 inch chamfered beam with no stops and concealed fireplace, 19th century cupboard door with elaborate ventilation grille. Bedroom over parlour has stone fireplace with wooden lintel. Another bedroom has an early 19th century pine surround. Roof has angled queen struts and staggered purlins. No 16 has to south front an early 17th century 3 light ovolo moulded window, 20th century dormer and 20th century porch. North front has 3 20th century dormers and 5 windows to ground floor including 1 casement, 1 mid 19th century sash with 6 panes and horns and 3 20th century sashes. No 16 was re-roofed in the 20th century and has 19th century doors. At the end of the 19th century it is thought that the cook and gardener of Appley Hall lived here.

2. L shape C17 house. Two storeys stone rubble with red brick dressings. Gable end old tile roofs. Four casement windows of two lights, C19. First floor windows break through eaves as dormers. Plain cottage door.
