Arched gateway and wall enclosing garden to front of Shuttleworth Hall, C17.
Coursed sandstone blocks, dressed pitched 2-course coping with moulded
ridge. Wall c.1 ½ metres high forming 3 sides of rectangular enclosure c.25
metres long and 15 metres wide, incorporating on its south side in line with
the porch of the house a moulded segmental-headed gateway with crow-stepped
parapet (lacking ball finial) and wooden doors with ornamental iron hinges;
coping of wall on east side incorporates a small octagonal pedestal with
carved panel on the outer face lettered at the head in relief "CH" (incised
on the reverse "EA") - this said to be pedestal of sundial, but too high to
be read from ground level; coping of wall on west side lacks the upper
course. (Reference: VCH vol.6, p.511).
