MARKET HARBOROUGH ABBEY STREET SP 7287- 7387 Number 10 1/10001 (The Old Fire Station) II GV

Fire station now cafe. Dated 1903; extended 1912 to matching design by Coales and Johnson for Market Harborough District Council; c1950 addition to rear. Brick and ashlar limestone; plain tile roof. 2 storeys, 4 bays; bays 1 and 2 of 1912, bays 3 & 4 of 1903. Green- glazed brick piers on granite bases support 4 segmentally-arched vehicle entrances having folding, part-glazed double doors. The arches are moulded and set within an ashlar panel; over bays 3 and 4 the words 'URBAN DISTRICT COUNCIL FIRE STATION / 1903'; cornice interrupted at centre. First floor; brick aprons and moulded sills to curved, mullioned and transomed 4-light windows having casements with glazing bars. Chamfered ashlar piers at each end and bay division rise through a cornice on corbels to form dies linked by curved brickwork parapet panels.
