Description

MILTON STREET, WESTCOTT
1.
1049
Old Bury Hill House
TQ 14 NE 10/63

II

2.
Large mansion built by James Walter in 1753. In 1812 it was purchased by
Robert Barclay who, on the death of Henry T1rale in 1781, had become the head
of the Brewery of Barclay, Perkins and Co. The centre was gutted by fire
in 1950 and now only the side wings remain. These are of a slightly lower
elevation than the former central part. 2 storeys and basement. Ground floor
stuccoed and rusticated; above cemented. Cornice and parapet on the south
or garden front. Slate roof. 3 window bays to each wing. On the south or
garden front, ground floors project with a balustraded parapet over forming
a balcony; also pediments over the centre 1st floor windows. All the windows
are in moulded architrave surrounds with glazing bars missing. On each side
of the house is a corridor, which on the south side forms a flanking wall
and on the north side is underground. This flanking wall on each side has
5 round-headed arches (the ones on the east side glazed) and joins the house
to a garden pavilion of 1 storey with former stables and offices behind these.
Each pavilion has 3 Venetian windows with a small round window in the corners.
Balustraded parapet over. Hipped slate roofs. Behind each is a higher building
of 2 storeys and 3 windows with a hipped tiled roof. The west of these was
the former stables and the east the offices, now both converted into flats.
The east and west ends of the house have coupled Ionic pilasters rising the
whole height of the house with a pediment over containing a circular window
in the pediment. 3 windows to each wing in north or entrance front. Central
window on ground floor has pediment over. Photographs in NMR.
