House. Possibly C17 with C19 additions and alterations. Thinly-rendered
sandstone and millstone grit rubble with quoins and ashlar dressings; C19
additions of coursed squared sandstone. Roofs stone-flagged and graduated
Lakeland slate, with stone chimneys. U-plan with rear wings: first build 2
storeys, 5 irregular bays, the 2 left wider; right addition of 2 higher storeys,
2 windows. First build has added gabled open stone porch in third bay, with
inner partly-glazed 6-panel door flanked by tapered half-columns supporting
flat stone lintel. 12-pane sashes, those on ground floor under tooled flat
stone lintels. Right addition has 16-pane sashes with flat stone lintels,
projecting stone sills and alternate-block jambs; wide first-floor band. Roof,
hipped at right, has 3 tall square stone ridge stacks, tapered at left; with 2
slates obliquely set over right chimney. Left return: 2 storeys, 8 bays, with
blocked elliptical arch in second; 12-pane sashes, first-floor sill band.
Right return: 2-storey end bays flank one-storey conservatory under
low-pitched hipped roof. Rear 2-storey stair wing with low one-storey outshut.
Interior: older part has walls about one metre thick; most windows have shutters;
C19 stair. 2 open arches in wall to right of entrance passage.
