Description

TL 85 NE STANNINGFIELD CHURCH ROAD

5/83 Bakers Farmhouse

21.2.72

II

House, formerly farmhouse; early C16 with alterations of early C17 and C18.
1 1/2 storeys and attics. Timber-framed and rendered. Thatched roof with
axial chimney of red brick. C19 and C20 casements and C20 battened and boarded
entrance door. Plan-form unusual; probably a 1 1/2 bay open hall, with a
sleeping loft over a further bay at the right-hand end, and a normal service
cell at the left-hand end beyond the cross-passage. Alterations of c.1600 also
unusual; fireplace inserted backing onto cross-passage and heating hall, with
insertion of 1st floor; a kitchen wing added to rear with large open fireplace
blocking rear of cross-passage, and converting to lobby entrance plan. At the
left hand, the originally hipped roof over the service end rebuilt with gable
in C18.
