BARKING BARKING TYE
TM 05 SE

2/14 Moat Farmhouse
-

GV II

Farmhouse, mid C17. 3-cell plan with both cross-passage and lobby-entrance.
2 storeys and attics. Timber-framed and plastered. Plaintiled roof with C17
axial chimney of red brick, a pilaster shaft at the centre. C19 small-pane
sashes. C20 plastered and plaintiled gabled entrance porch with pair of
panelled doors. A good example of a C17 farmhouse with well exposed framing:
close-studding, and exposed chamfered ceiling joists laid flat in some rooms
and on edge in others. Principal-rafter roof with joggled butt purlins. Good
back-to-back fireplaces, that in the parlour with a brick arch, that in the
hall with cambered lintel. The house stands upon a site with an incomplete
mediaeval moat.
