4/21 Forward gate piers to Lyme
Park Drive

GV II

Gate piers: Late C17 but moved c.1860, perhaps from end of the
approach past the Cage. Ashlar buff sandstone. Square in plan with
stepped projection to each side and buttresses at rear. On moulded
plinth with front face plain but the sides have semi-circular headed
niches and moulded rectangular panels above. To rear is a rectangular
sectioned, 2-stage buttress surmounted by a scrolled console.
Capstone is weathered to each face above a moulded cornice and
supports a circular urn decorated with acanthus leaves and containing
a compact floral display.

The gate piers stand immediately in front of the lodge etc., Buxton
Road West (q.v.).
