Folly. Mid C19 re-using mediaeval masonry features, mainly C12 and C15, removed
from Romsey Abbey (qv) during restoration. Ashlar and rubble by Benjamin Ferrey
as decorative feature in garden to west of house. Folly is a screen extending
to north from partial enclosure against the side of the south boundary wall
of the Vicarage (qv) constructed in three phases. The largest element is a
C15 five light arched window with perpendicular tracery flanked by C19 buttresses
in rubble with a C15 buttress with ashlar offsets on the south side. The enclosure
adjoining to the south has a two-light perpendicular window on the west side
and a three light screen on its north side made up from C15 window fragments.
Adjacent in the angle of the south return of the garden boundary wall is a C12
doorway with the inner order of a moulded semi-circular arch and carved capitals
on the south side. Other minor mediaeval fragments incorporated. Group value
with the Vicarage (qv).
