SK 76 NE NORMANTON-ON-TRENT MAIN STREET

5/53 The School House

G.V. II

School, now cottage. Dated 1776, altered early C20. Colour
washed red brick. Pantile roof. Single left gable and single
ridge rendered stacks. Raised and rendered left gable with
tumbled in brickwork. Dentil eaves. 2 storeys, 4 bays with a
first floor band. Doorway with C20 glazed door, to the right is a
similar blocked doorway and further right a single tripartite
glazing bar Yorkshire sash. To the left is a single similar
sash. All ground floor openings are under segmental arches.
Above are 2 C20 tripartite casements. An ashlar plaque above the
blocked doorway is inscribed "Henry Jackson of this town Gent
built and endowed this school for four pounds a year for the
education of ten poor children belonging to this parish Anno Dom
1776". To the left is a lower one and a half storey, single bay,
extension with single glazing bar Yorkshire and single C20
casement above. Interior has many exposed beams in the 2 rooms
flanking the doorway and a closed well staircase.
