Description


1. UPPER HIGH STREET 5365 Entrance Gates and Gatepiers to Vivary Park ST 2224 SE 11/413 II GV 2. Facing the south end of High Street. Probably dating from l896 when the park was laid out. Very elaborate late Victorian ironwork gates and gatepiers. Main gatepiers have openwork circular details and tops with brackets supporting bronze lamps with scrolled crossbars. Double gates between piers with scrolled detail and Taunton Borough coat of arms amid the uprights. Overthrows with scrolls and finials. Subsidiary gatepiers surmounted by bronze acorns to left and right and with lower double lies between. All ironwork details as before. Short fixed extensions of openwork railings to left and right.

The listed buildings in Vivary Park and Mount Street form a group together with the School, Unitarian Chapel, the Lawn and Mary Street House in Mary Street, Wilton House in Hammets Walk and Nos 1 to 14 (consec) Upper High Street.
