Cotton spinning mill, incorporating mill house, now a store.
Built 1787 by the Robinson family of Papplewick. Coursed and
squared rubble and dressed stone with hipped and gabled slate and
plain tile roofs, renewed late C20. Stone quoins. Single
external side wall stack. 3 storeys plus basement, 9 bays.
Central mill building with single set back 2 storey wings.
Windows are C19 and C20 casements and glazing bar sashes.
Basement has half-round openings. Top floor openings are
smaller. South front has to left, wing with 2 basement openings.
Mill has door to left, and to its right, 3 openings. To right
again, C20 loading door in altered opening. Beyond, 4 openings,
one of them blocked. Above, wing to left has a casement and a
sash. Mill has to left a casement flanked by single blocked
openings. To their right, a hatch and a loading door. Beyond, 5
casements, 2 of them blocked. Above again, to left, 2 sashes.
To their right, 2 casements, one of them blocked. Beyond,
loading door. Beyond, 6 casements, one of them blocked. Above
again, to left, loading door flanked by single casements. To
right, 2 casements. Mill house west end has door flanked by a
casement and a sash. Above, to right, a sash. Above again, mill
gable has 2 sashes. East end has to left, C20 loading door.
Above it, blocked casement. Above to right, 2 small casements.
Mill east gable has 2 sashes. Rear elevation has no basement.
To left, casement with segmental head. To its right, blocked
keystoned opening. Beyond again, casement and half-round blocked
opening above blocked wheel opening. Beyond again, 5 casements
over wheel opening. Above, east wing has 2 casements. Mill has
9 casements, 3 of them bolocked. Beyond, mill house has 2
casements. Above again, mill has 5 smaller square casements.
This mill is one of a number built at Papplewick, Hucknall and
Bulwell by the Robinson family who pioneered industrial cotton
spinning and the use of steam power in this area.
