St Vincent Centre
GV II
Training building at former Royal Marine Barracks. Mid-late C19, of 2 builds.
Red brick in English bond, added part of red brick in Flemish bond; ashlar
dressings. Welsh slate roof, added part with replacement felting. One storey.
Main building, gable-end on, of 3 x 4 bays, truncated at rear by added block, 1
bay deep and 4 bays wide. Gable end: chamfered plinth; pilasters near each end;
corners offset at eaves. Centre bay projects slightly and has: steps up to
full-width entrance with late C20 board doors, cyma-moulded stone imposts, and
concreted lintel; lunette above with gauged brick arch, tripartite keystone and
small-pane tripartite window. Stepped gable with moulded stone coping. Right
return: alternate bays are narrower and have blind recesses with chamfered
bases and stepped tops; end recesses are narrower, that on left with concrete
step up to iron-hinged metal door with concrete lintel. Windows: 2 on left
have segmental brick arches, raised brick keystones and paired 2-light 4-pane
casements; 3rd and 4th windows wider, of 3 similar casements, with stone imposts
and evidence of former shutter holders above and below; all but 4th window have
metal frames. Glazed clerestory to ridge. Left return: similar, but with only
3 recesses and formerly 2 wide window openings, these partly bricked up and each
now with 3 small-pane wooden windows; stone imposts; wooden shutter holder above
windows and brackets from former lower shutter holder below. Rear addition:
each bay of end and return elevations has a round-arched recess containing
similarly-arched opening and all with stone sills, gauged brighter-red brick
arches, and impost band. End elevation: on right, 4 stone steps up to former
doorway, now bricked up; other recesses have windows, now boarded up and the 2nd
with late C20 door up steps. Coped parapet. Hipped roof with stacks near ends
of ridge. Interior: cambered board floor, with some concrete insets; kick
board along side walls; round-edged sills and steel lintels to windows;
diagonally-boarded roof with braced steel trusses; hinged louvres at base of
clerestory. 3 doorways into addition, set approximately 1 metre above floor
level and with stone sills. Small former strong room in front right corner.
The building, with its cambered floor, may have been used as a gun training
deck, but it is dissimilar to the known gun training deck at Plymouth.
