Pair of houses, now divided into four. Newly built in 1717 by Edward Newens, a local
bricklayer, No. 171 dated 1714 on lintel. Brown brick, no. 169 refronted in stock brick early
C19. An unusual plan, with Nos. 171 and 173 the principal structures, of three storeys with two
rooms per floor and a rear stair; each was served by a two-storey wing housing coach house,
kitchens and servants' quarters. Sash windows in shallow reveals with gauged-brick, flat-arched
heads, door to No. 173 with architrave and rectangular traceried fanlight. Ground-floor to No.
173 restored in facsimile following removal of shop in 1993. No. 169 has a Georgian-style shop-front of mid-C20.

Interior. No. 173 retains panelled entrance hall and staircase hall, the stair with original
balustrade. Plain panelling with dado to ground floor, C19 fireplace; splayed window
embrasures in rear room. First floor back room retains all its original panelling, with dado-rail,
cornice and window seats. Front room with original six-panelled door. No. 171 with inserted
later C18 features of interest, No. 169 with relocated panelling.

Early-mid C19 building abutting on No 171. 2 storeys, 1 window. Stock brick with
stone coped parapet. Sash window with glazing bars in flush frame under segmental
arch. Hipped slated roof. Projecting reproduction Georgian shop front on ground
floor. Group value.

Dated 1714 over the door of No 171 but looks a little later. Pair, each 3 storeys,
3 windows. Brown brick with red brick dressings. Parapet rebuilt in stock brick,
stone-coped. Fairly high pitched slated roof with central chimney stack. Bands
at lst and 2nd floor levels. Gauged flat brick arches to sash windows with glazing
bars in near-flush wood architraves. Paired narrow window-like recesses on axis.
No 171 has early C19 6-panel door with reeded head, rectangular fanlight and bracketed
corniece hood. No 173 has projecting altered late C19 shop on ground floor.

Nos 169 to 185 (odd) form a group.
