Wethersfield Mill House

GV II

Mill house. Built in 1856, probably by Chancellor of Chelmsford. Red
brick with bands of gault brick. Slate roofs with deep eaves and
shaped bargeboards and finials to gable verges. Brick lateral and
axial stacks with cambered brick caps. Plan: Double depth plan with
principal rooms at front projecting on either side of central entrance
hall. Exterior: 2 storeys. Symmetrical 3-bay front. Projecting bays
to left and right with round ventilators in gables. Sash windows, with
side lights on ground floor and vertical glazing bars on first floor;
scroll carving to stone lintels. C19 wooden porch in central recess
and panelled and glazed door. Right hand east return has sash windows
and canted bay window on right. Left (west) return has small single
storey wing and C20 porch in angle. At rear 2 lateral stacks, sash
windows and C20 weatherboarded extension. Interior said to contain
some of the timbers from the former mill house. Including wrought iron
garden area railings in front with decorative finials, on brick dwarf
wall and with ornate wrought iron pedestrian gate at centre in front
of front door.
