Former institution and gallery, now offices. c1823 by John Nash with James
Elmes. Stucco, slate roof. Graeco Roman. 3 storeys and attic storey. 3 windows
wide. Advanced arcaded ground floor - podium supporting an imposing Roman
Doric, giant, pedimented portico screening 2 storeys of architraved sash
windows. Small square attic windows and crowning cornice and blocking course.
Interior by Elmes and Nash much altered by office development behind facade but
retaining gallery now as part of No 1 Hobhouse Court. The Society of British
Artists was founded by James Elmes (father of Harvey Lonsdale Elmes of St
George's Hall fame) in 1823 and he was the editor of Shepherd's "Metropolitan
Improvements" etc. Important survival of Nash's street architecture in the
Regent Street manner.
