THE GROVE Gatekeeper' s Cottage

Former level crossing keeper's cottage shown on OS map as The Gate House.
C1850 for South Eastern and Chatham line. Italianate style. Painted brick with
stone plinth and painted stone quoins and dressings. Shallow pitched Welsh slate
roof with overhanging eaves. Tall central chimneystack. i-plan with small lower- roofed room, possibly former office or store to rear. C20 flat-roofed brick
extension in north-west corner. Single storey throughout. East elevation has off-centre 4-panel door with lean-to slate hood which continues from the roof,
supported on curved wooden brackets. To left, a single light round-headed window
with C20 casement, followed by another similar window. To right a similar smaller window. South elevation has to right a gable end wall with slight forward pro-
jection with moulded cornice, containing coupled round-headed windows with moulded arches and imposts, with C19 plain sashes. There is a single round-headed window with fixed light on the return wall. Set back to left, coupled round-headed windows with case- ments, and set back to left again a single round-headed window with fixed light.
