BOXTED CHURCH STREET
1.
5214
Church of St Peter
TL 93 SE 3/82 7.4.65
I GV
2.
Comprising a west tower which at its base is of the mid C12 and built of indurated
conglomerate. This was repaired in red brick at its top stage, in irregular
English bond, embattled and stone coped, with angle buttresses. The tower
incorporates much original timber, and door-leaves and their cases. Nave: tall
with ridge and gable roof peg-tiled with some crested ridge bonnets. North and
south aisles added circa 1300 when arcades were cut through the walls - arches
and 'piers' chamfered. Norman windows blocked at this time, and a clerestorey
cut higher up. South aisle has 2 cinque foil windows in single centred heads
and a dormer-height bay window. South porch medieval, timber framed and heavily
restored, with roof of early type. Chancel perpendicular re-pointed and with
re-set windows and details: late C14. This has angle buttresses. Much re-used
red brick (possibly Roman) and 2 trefoiled windows in east end of nave above
chancel apex. North aisle: early English circa 1300 with much indurated conglomerate,
north door bricked up. Inside: crown-post roof of circa 1300 on moulded tie-beams
with scissor-braced couples. Gallery on 4 slender cast iron columns dated 1836.
Brick floor, and monument to Richard Blackmore, chest, ironbound of uncertain
date.
