House, partly of non-domestic form originally. C16 3-bay main
range and cross-wing with later additions and alterations.
Timber-framed, rendered, with brick plinth. Plain tile roofs. 3-
bay central lobby-entry range facing garden with added end stack.
Stair tower to rear flanked by two-storey extension to left and
single-storey extension to right. 5-bay cross-wing under hipped
roof with central stack runs back from road at left, forming L-
plan. This has a C20 extension attached to left. Two storeys
throughout. Garden front: 3-bay range has two canted bays under
tile roofs. An open porch, integral with the right hand bay,
contains a 4-panel door. 2-light casement to left. C20 3-light
casements to first floor. The end wall of the cross range has a
3-light C18 leaded casement to the ground floor and a C20 3-light
casement above. Street front: 3-bay range, C20 casements
throughout, 4-panel door in lean-to porch. Cross-wing flank wall
has 3 C18 3-light casements and one C20 casement. Interior: The
only framing exposed in the 3-bay range is a pair of longitudinal
beams with tongue and jewel stops. They bear onto the inglenook
which has chamfered jambs, a chamfered cambered mantelbeam and
salt niches. Cross Range: Its unusual plan is not domestic in
form. The wide bay nearest the street is an addition. The
remainder is divided into 4 unequal bays, two narrow bays to the
front and 2 wider bays to the rear. The stack in the second
narrow bay is inserted. Everything above wall plate level,
including the tie beams, has been removed by C18 heightening.
Some lightly smoke-blackened rafters are incorporated in the
roof. Ground floor: The two rear bays form a single fine room.
The central posts are hollow-chamfered. Wide-chamfered beam;
centre-tenoned joists with housed soffits, stencilled with Tudor
roses. Shutter groove to end wall with central peg. The two
narrow bays were subdivided by stud partitions. To first floor
posts 2 and 4 (of the 4-bay section) are chamfered with
asymmetrical stops at feet).
