and pergolas GV II

Fernery banks, bridges and pergolas. c1860, restored 1995. Coursed rubble and cast iron. This fernery consists of banks of rough terrace walls topped with gravelled paths, with flanking battlemented walls topped with cast iron chain pergolas, linking 2 segment arched bridges with cast iron balustrades. The east bank is topped by a segment arched alcove topped with ashlar coping and 2 urns, this alcove presumably once contained a seat for viewing the fern valley.
