3/112 Thomas Ford Chest Tomb in St
- Michael's Churchyard, about 40 cms
south of chancel

GV II

Chest tomb. Probably late C17. Granite. Chest made of 4 pieces of granite, set on
a chamfered plinth; flat capstone with moulded edges and carved inscription on top.
The south side has 3 short fluted pilasters without capitals, 1 in the middle and 1
at each end. Capstone has an inscription, set in a border defined by incised lines,
commemorating Thomas Ford of Sigford, who died 19 November ----. The year never
seems to have been carved. In the centre of the stone is what appears to be a Latin
inscription. This was probably the Thomas Ford buried at Ilsington on 21 November
1663 (parish register).
