Dated 1858 with J F (the builder's initials) in a quartrefoil within a plaque on
eastermost of the three gabled bays which form the frontage. One storey front (the
larger central bay housing an attic) becoming two storeys at the back where the basement
is of full height because of hill slope. Walls of polygonal Reigate stone with window
voussoirs. Banded pattern toiiled roof with fancy ridge tiles bargeboards and finials.
Central pointed arched doorway with double door. Varied windows.
The house was formerly known as Furze Hill House and was provided for the painter Samuel
Palmer by his father-in-law. He was its first occupant and lived there until his death in
1881, the period of his illustrations to Milton's works. House is listed for this reason.
