8/353 Cosford Mill

II

Mill-house and mill. c1580 2 bay smoke bay house altered in late C18 and
late C17 or early C18 mill heightened in early Cl9. House is timber-
framed with some wall frame visible and 3 original diamond mullioned
casements, ground floor of diaper brickwork the 1st floor infilled in
stretcher bond. Tiled roof with tall brick chimneystack. 1 C19 3-light
casement with leaded lights. Right end heightened in C18 of diaper
Flemish brickwork with modillion cornice. 1 C19 diamond mullioned
window on pintle hinges. C19 brick and tiled gabled porch. Right side
elevation has external brick stack and 1 casement. Rear elevation has 3
casements and roof in 3 hips. Mill attached to left is probably late
C17 heightened in early C19. 2 lower floors are of Bargate stone rubble
with brick dressings, heightened in diaper brickwork. Half-hipped tiled
roof with weatherboarded gable. Gable has small 3-light window and
hoist door. Below is a 3-light mullion obscuring a cambered opening.
Ground floor has 1 cambered opening and 1 bricked in cambered opening.
Right side has blocked cambered opening to 1st floor. 1 hoist opening
with plank door. Cambered opening to ground floor. Plinth. Overshot
wheel originally. House has early C17 open fireplace with 4 centred
brick arch and exposed beams with chamfered spine beam. 1st floor
retains bay port for smoke bay. Sooted rafters only to small smoke bay.
Clasped purlin roof. The mill retains much of its machinery and
gearing. Staggered butt purlin roof.

The first recorded owner was Richard Shudd (1536).
