2/179 Cheriton Cottage and
Lammacott Cottage
II
2 cottages, made by dividing a former farmhouse. C16 or Cl7, thoroughly refurbished
in the late C18 - early C19, probably when divided. Plastered cob on stone rubble
footings; stone rubble stacks with plastered chimney shafts; thatch roof. Plan
and development: pair of cottages facing south-south-east, say south. Cheriton
Cottage is the right (west) one. It has a 2-room plan; a small unheated room at
the end and larger room with projecting rear lateral stack. Lammacott Cottage to
right (east) is a 1-room plan with an end stack. Although much altered it seems
that the original farmhouse was C16 or C17 and had a 3-room and through-passage
plan. Cheriton Cottage occupies the former inner room and hall. Lammacott Cottage
occupies the site of the passage and the lowerend room. However no carpentry detail
earlier than the late C18 - early C19 is exposed. 2 storeys with late C18 - early
C19 agricultural extension on the left end (now in domestic use) and secondary out-
shuts across the rear. Exterior: irregular overall 5-window front of similar late
C19 - early C20 casements with glazing bars, all with slightly curious timber plank
hoodmoulds. The former passage front doorway is right of centre and used by
Lammacott Cottage. It contains a C19 plank door and contemporary hood. Cheriton
Cottage front doorway is towards the left end and contains a C20 door and
contemporary thatch-roofed porch. The main roof is half-hipped to right and gable-
ended to left. The outbuilding adjoining to left has a C20 thatch-roofed porch
in front and its roof is hipped. Interior: contains plain carpentry detail where
exposed including a roof structure carried on A-frame trusses with spiked lap-
jointed collars.
