Farmhouse. Circa late C15 remodelled in circa early to mid C16 and early to mid
C17, extended and altered in C18 and/or C19. Roughcast cob and stone rubble.
Slate roof with gabled ends. 2 lateral stacks at the front with tall rendered
shafts rising from the front wall. PLAN: A 3-room and through passage plan, the
lower end to the right. The hall and the lower end room are heated from lateral
stacks at the front. The unheated inner room has a stair turret at the back.
Across the back there is a single storey outshut and at the lower right hand end
another outshut with a loft above. DEVELOPMENT: At least the hall and probably
the lower end of the original house were open to the roof. The chamber over the
inner room may have been an original feature; this is jettied about 6 inches into
the hall. While the hall was still open to the roof a chamber was created over
the lower end, jettied over the passage into the hall. The lateral stack at the
front of the hall may have been built when the lower end floor was inserted, but
in any case it is likely to have been built before the hall itself was floored in
circa early to mid C17. Contemporaneous with the flooring of the hall was the
widening of the doorway between the hall and the inner room, probably as access to
a staircase inserted at the same time at the back of the inner room, therefore
making the newel staircase redundant. The rear outshut and another outshut at the
lower right hand end are probably C18 or C19 additions. Sometime in the C19 a
straight staircase was inserted under the jetty at the lower end of the hall
rising from the back of the passage. Another staircase was added at the rear of
the lower end room, which suggests the house may have been divided in the C19 and
since reunited. The putative early to mid C17 staircase in the inner room was
probably removed in the C19. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys Asymmetrical 4-window range
of C20 sashes and casements. On the ground floor and on the right hand of the
first floor there are 4-pane sashes. The remainder of the first floor windows are
small 2-light casements. The through-passage doorway to the right of centre has a
C19 plank door and a lean-to slate canopy on wooden cantilevers. A C20 glazed
door has been inserted into the front of the inner room to the left. At the lower
right hand end a lean-to 1-storey and attic outshut with an old plank door and a
C20 casement above. The rear elevation has a rounded projecting stair turret to
the right and the remainder of the rear wall is concealed by a single storey
outshut with an asbestos tile lean-to roof. Attached to the outshut at the lower
right hand end there is a C19 outbuilding at right angles. It is now a garage on
the ground floor with dwelling accommodation above. INTERIOR: In the hall the
joist ends of the jetties are curved and chamfered, the higher end with diagonal
stops, the lower end has butt stops. The higher end jetty is only about 6 inches
deep and set on a solid wall between the hall and the inner room, while the lower
end jetty is about 3 feet deep, but its joists are stopped on the soffit
indicating that the passage partition has been moved making the passage narrower.
The hall has a chamfered cross-beam and joists, all with bar stops. There is a
similarly stopped chamfered lintel to a former opening in the wall between the
hall and inner room. The hall fireplace in the front lateral stack has a high-set
chamfered timber lintel with indeterminate (possibly run-out) stops, on granite
corbels with curved ends; now blocked with a C20 fireplace. The inner room has
heavy unchamfered joists, and at the back a blocked stair-turret. The passage has
chamfered joists and a stud and plaster partition on the lower side. The lower
end room has a chamfered cross-beam with straight-cut stops and a fireplace in the
front stack with a mid C19 moulded chimneypiece and cast-iron grate. ROOF was
replaced, probably in C19, with elm nailed principal rafters, except for what
remains in the partitions at the higher and lower ends of the hall chamber; the
lower partition over the jetty has wattle infill and what appears to be
smoke-blackening on the lower side of the rear principal.
