GV II*

Canal warehouse. c1819, with mid C20 alterations, restored
1994. Brick with stone dressings and slate roof. Plinth,
quoins to ground floor, first floor band, coped pedimented
gables.
EXTERIOR: 4 storeys plus attics; 11 x 7 windows.
Symmetrical canal side has a slightly projecting centre, 7
windows, under a pediment. Regular fenestration with glazing
bar sashes, mostly reglazed. Central full height round-headed
recess to the upper floors, with a loft door on each floor.
Above it, a half-round window. Ground floor has a segmental
arched rusticated opening for boats, flanked by single
round-headed rusticated openings, now blocked. Beyond, on
either side, 2 windows.
Rear elevation, to wharf, has similar fenestration, the right
side largely covered by a 2 storey mid C19 addition.
Symmetrical south gable has tall elliptical arched recesses in
the central, second and sixth bays, the central one being
taller. These have loft doors on each floor of the outer bays
and on the top floor of the central bay. Ground floor has a
central rusticated elliptical arched cart opening flanked by
smaller blocked elliptical arched openings. INTERIOR not
inspected.
A good example of a specialised canal building.
