12/1005 Barn immediately
North West of
Coptfoldhall
Farmhouse

II

Barn: Mid-late C18th. Walls of soft red brick and lime mortar in flemish bond with
corbelled details to eaves. Roofs hipped at either end and to the midstrey, covered
in hand made clay peg tiles with half round clay ridge and hip tiles. Lean-to
extension to west of midstrey timber framed on brick plinth and weatherboarded with
clay pantiles to roof. Lean-to extension to east of midstrey, constructed in brick
with asbestos corrugated sheet roof. Lean-to on east end, timber framed and
weatherboarded, natural slate roof with half round clay tiles to hips. Seven bays,
with a centrally placed midstrey with lean-to extensions either side on the south
side. Also lean-to extension on east end. Side walls to barn have a series of
splayed vertical openings on the ground floor. Originally used for
cross-ventilation, now blocked.

Interior: Main roof originally framed staggered side purlin with king-post trusses.
Purlins double pegged into principal rafters, rafters pairs pegged at ridge, lower
secondary rafters pegged into side purlins. Hips constructed with dragon and cross
ties. Roof to midstrey staggered side purlin with queen strutts to principal rafters
and dragon and cross-ties to hips.
'
Original building has been partly altered, with much of the roof framing removed in
5 bays on the north side and replaced with a soft wood single side purlin and rafter
construction. A timber floor on a steel frame has been inserted, and the midstrey
reduced in height by an inserted weatherboarded panel. Opening in the north wall
opposite the midstrey reduce in width by later brick infill.

Note: Description of barn contained in 1828 sales particulars for the Coptfold Hall
Estate (EORO D/Ma B71). From this it is clear the lean-to.extensions to the east of
the midstrey and on the east end post date 1828.
