Mid C19. [Mill Road was laid out circa 1850 (Map in Arundel Castle Archives).
Before then the Bridge Gates would have been outside the Castle Grounds, separated
by Mill Lane, which was closed when Mill Road was built].
Knapped flint. Pulborough stone lower courses, quoins, dressings and battered
coping. Pulborough stone chimneys.
2 circular bastions with battered lower courses and crenellated parapets flank
main gateway. East bastion 1 storey: remainder 2 storeys.
East bastion has 3 pointed lancets with chamfered embrasures and diagonal lead
glazing bars and 1 blind arrow slit in east re-entrant angle. Extended to east
with no windows apart from 1 oblong lancet with chamfered embrasures and diagonal
lead glazing bars in east elevation of extruded corner. Octagonal chimney on
square base with original spurs, and battered upper courses.
West bastion has 3 pointed lancets with chamfered embrasures and diagonal lead
glazing bars on ground floor, and 2 on 1st floor. Extended to west, with 5 oblong
lancets with chamfered embrasures and diagonal lead glazing bars on ground floor,
and 3 on 1st floor. Parapet crow-stepped down to level of adjoining wall at west
end. Stringcourse above 1st floor. 2 oblong chimneys with battered upper courses.
Main gateway has 1 planked double door with ornamental iron hinges, in pointed
archway with 3 chimneys and hood mould, continued west as stringcourse above 1
planked door with ornamental iron hinges in pointed arch with chamfered embrasures
and hoodmould. 2 plain square ashlar panels above doors, and 1 oblong lancet
with chamfered embrasures and diagonal lead glazing bars above smaller door.
4 arrow slits in plain parapet.
