Tunnel portal. 1831-34 with slight C20 alterations. Brick and stone.
Single, semi-circular arch with upward curving band and solid parapet.
Spandrels curve outwards and run into wing walls which have trailing
edges. All of brick except copings which are stone. Double towpaths
throughout tunnel with cast-iron hand-rails with trailing edges for
tow-ropes. A rare example of a canal tunnel with these features,
constructed during 1830's improvements to the Oxford Canal carried out
with William Cubitt as consultant engineer.
North Portal lies in Harborough Magna civil parish q.v.
