House. 1582 (datestone) built for Robert and Ann Menwenicke and extended in 1771.
Stone rubble, the earlier range partly constructed of ashlar stone with moulded
plinth and moulded string. Slate roof with hipped end on left and gable end on
right. Hipped end to 2-storey porch and front wing. Stone rubble end stack on
right, axial stack to left of centre and side lateral stack to front wing.
Plan: The original plan is uncertain. The main range is of three-room plan with a
2-storey porch and one-room plan and entrance wing on front and outshut to rear of
right hand room. The main range has an unusual arrangememt, the central and right
hand room sharing an axial stack and the right hand room heated by an axial stack.
It appears that the entrance was probably to right of centre, possibly with a through
passage with a later 2-storey porch (dated 1771) to front. Above the passage, to
left, the central room is unusually small and possibly originally unheated whilst the
left hand room was probably the principal room lit by an impressive window with fine
fireplace. It is possible that this part of the house has been altered and
originally continued further to the left. Below the putative passage the large
kitchen to right is heated by an end stack and has a dog leg stair in a stair turret
to rear and a circa C18 outshut adjoining to rear.
Exterior: Two storeys. Asymmetrical 4-window front. There is a 2-storey wing to
left of centre and a 2-storey porch to right of centre. To far left is a 6-light
mullion window with inscription above of 'ANNO DOMINI 1582 BY M.E. ROBART AND AN
MENWENICKE'. The inscription continues beyond the granite lintel, onto the ashlar
stone adjoining. There is a C19 or C20 mullion and transom window above. The wing
adjoining to left of centre has a round headed arched entrance in the left hand side
wall, which is set back and has a late C19 or C20 mullion and transom window above
and to right on ground and first floor. In the front hipped end a C20 canted bay
window on ground floor and late C19 or or C20 mullion and transom window above. To
right, set slightly back is the 2-storey porch which has a blocked entrance on ground
floor with datestone 1771 on lintel and late C19 or C20 mullion and transom window
above. This porch is partly obscured by a C20 garage which has been built in front.
To right, C19 double sash lighting the kitchen with late C19 or C20 mullion and
transom on first floor. C17 chamfered timber doorframe, the lintel replaced with
C17 double lapped and studded door, probably reset, in side entrance to outshut.
Interior: Ceilings plastered. Kitchen fireplace blocked. To rear of kitchen stair
projection containing dog-leg stair with boarded balustrade. C20 grate to fireplace
in central room. Left-hand room has a fine granite 4-centred hollow chamfered
fireplace with spandrel inscribed 'R M'. Late C18 or C19 stair in front wing.
First floor not inspected.
