Description

The following building shall be added;

LEVENS
SD 48 NE Underhill House with
Barn and Pigsties
1/33 adjoining to West

II

Former farmhouse with adjoining barn and pigsties. Late C17/early C18, with C19
additions and alterations. House and barn wet-dashed rubble on plinth; pigsties
unrendered snecked rubble with quoins. Graduated slate gable-end roof (continuous
over all units) with rendered axial and external end stacks (to original house).
House and barn 2 storeys; pigsties under lean-to roof at west end. Plan: The
rendering obscures much of the evidence for the buildings development. Most likely
a 3-room plan with baffle entry to north, the axial stack heating a kitchen/downhouse
to west, and living room to east, with parlour beyond (heated by end stack and
divided from living room by a partition, now removed). Combined external stair turret
and pantry to north adjoining entry. A small barn west of downhouse converted in C19
to living accommodation; the large barn extension (with vehicular access to north) and
pigsties C19 also. Exterior: North elevation with only 2 small windows lighting
stair/pantry turret (under catslide roof); entry with modern lean-to glazed porch.
Barn with tall segmentally-headed cart entrance. South elevation: scattered
fenestration; original house with 2 12-pane horned sash window and one 4-pane unhorned
sash window to 1st floor; ground floor with 12-pane horned sash window to either side
of part-glazed C19 planed door (now in C20 conservatory); original barn conversion
with one tall 4-pane horned sash window. C19 barn with re-used C17 cavetto-moulded
2-light, wood-mullioned window. Interior: principal room with stopped and chamfered
ceiling beams (one with mortice holes for partition) and joists. End fireplace
surround is pecked and margined with moulded mantel-shelf; C19 marble fireplace (to
west room), the mantel-shelf supported by console brackets, with ornate cast-iron insert.
Small late - C18 cast iron grate to 1st floor. Roof: principals with collar, ridge
piece and side purlins, the main timbers chamfered in the original house.
