Early/mid C19 boundary stone on medieval base of wayside cross. Roughly-
dressed sandstone shaft, approximately 35cm x 28cm x 79cm high, on square
limestone base approximately 58cm x 64cm x 38cm high. Shaft inscribed with
cross on north and south sides; plinth inscribed 'WHITE CROSS' above bench
mark on east face. Upper portion of original cross now in Whitby Museum.
Originally marked junction of Old West Road (between Guisborough and Whitby)
and track to Commondale; on boundaries between parishes of Lockwood and
Danby and counties of Cleveland and North Yorkshire.
