GV II
Chest tomb with sculptured leaning figure. Early C20, designer
unknown. Stone. Stepped rectangular base with carved
enrichment. Battered chest with carved figurative relief
panels to long sides and inscribed ends. Pitched roof with
antefixae to pediments. Leaning across the tomb, a life-size
sculptured distraught female in classical robes, her head
supported by right hand. Maria Cassavetes, (d. 1914), later
Mrs. Maria Zambaco, was a prominent pre-Raphaelite, being an
artist and medallist in her own right as well as girlfriend of
Rossetti and then Burne-Jones, both of whom made portraits of
her.
