1/10000 Farm outbuilding to the north- west of Burge End Farmhouse

Farm outbuilding. Late C17, with C18 and C19 alterations. Weather-boarded timber-frame, set on a low brick cill, with sections of brick walling at south end. Corrugated metal roof covering. 6-bay structure aligned north-south, with added lean-to structure on the east side wall, possibly replacing an earlier structure, the panels of the enclosed wall with wattle and plaster infill. Boarded partitions separate the 2 centre bays from 2-bay north and south sections. The frame has jowled wall posts and unjowled mid-bay posts, and substantial studs interrupted by mid rails and tension bracing. East side wall with former double doorway to centre, now partially infilled, and aligned doorways at south end from lean-to offshut into barn body. Posts within offshut have empty mortices on east faces. Roof structure of single clasped purlin type, and with 4 queen-strut roof trusses, including truss 1 to north gable, all with braces to wall posts, which are straight except those to truss 4, which are curved. Trusses 2, 6 and 7 have collar beams, and vertical studs infilling the truss apex. Truss 6 has fragments of plastered wattle infill. Truss 5 has a severed tie beam, and a replacement truss introduced behind. The south-east gable has down-braces from the jowl posts to the mid-rail. There is a taking-in door to the south gable and a doorway in the north gable. A multi-phase timber-framed building in which the frame is substantially complete, and which forms an important component of a farmstead group which includes Burge End Farmhouse (qv).
