6/181 Hoppers Cottage and the
Roundels
GV II
2 houses, converted from a barn. Barn circa late C17/early C18 in origin
(documented in 1730), converted to houses between 1842 and 1864, renovations
of the 1970s. Framed construction, the ground floor underbuilt in Flemish
bond brick, the first floor weatherboarded; peg-tile roof; brick stacks.
Plan: East facing. 2 2-cell houses each with an axial stack, the internal
plan of Hoppers Cottage with some C20 alterations since the original
conversion, the Roundels not inspected internally.
Exterior: 2 storeys and attic. Symmetrical 4-window front plus one window to
a lower-roofed addition to the Roundels at the south end. 4 ground floor 3-
light C20 small-pane casements, 6 similar first floor 2-light casements. The
old List Description (1949) described sash windows, these probably dated from
the original conversion. Roof half-hipped at ends, with deep eaves and the
half-hip oversailing to shelter former loft doors in the end walls.
Interior: Hoppers Cottage only inspected; this preserves original wall-
framing on the first floor, the wall posts with formed jowls. Most of the
braces between wall post and tie beam have been removed.
Forms a group with neighbouring listed houses at Mile Oak.
An example of an early barn conversion.
