Description

SAWLEY PATELEY BRIDGE ROAD
SE 26 NW ( west side, off)

4/144 West Gowbusk Farmhouse

GV II

House. Mid-late C17, refenestrated and extended early C19. Coursed squared
gritstone, graduated stone slate roof. 2 storeys, 2 bays with 2-storey
added bay to right. Bay to right: board door in plain stone surround; 4-
pane sash with projecting sill and large lintel to right, ground and first
floor. Earlier 2-bay house: probably blocked doorway to right; recessed-
chamfered mullion windows to left and left again of 4 lights with mullions
removed. First floor: 2 casement windows with wooden lintels. End stacks,
and ridge stack above join between C17 house and added bay. Interior: left
room: horizontal timbers hidden beneath wallpaper at ceiling level on front,
rear and partition walls. Central room: large fireplace, spine beam,
straight flight of stairs against rear wall. The house was probably of 2-
cell end-lobby-entrance plan; the timbers in the left ground-floor room are
possibly the remains of an earlier timber-framed house.
