Mill and attached mill house. Early C19, altered. Brick and
rubblestone, rendered. Corrugated iron roof to mill and rear of
house which at front has Welsh slates. 2 storeys, mill having
basement and attic. House on left of 1:1 bays, mill of 3 bays.
House: left bay projects having small 2-pane casement to each
floor; right bay has C20 wood and glass porch on right (not of
special interest) masking 6-panel door (top 2 panels glazed),
with a 16-pane sash to its left on each floor; lateral stack at
left end and another at junction of bays. Mill: at right end a
board stable door in wood porch; at left end sluice with wooden
sluice gate and door above in round-arched opening; to its right
is mill race, having keyed elliptical-arched opening with double
board door and cantilevered platform in front; between mill race
and door are two windows, that on left barred, that on right with
cambered head and 2-light small-pane casement. lst floor: double
board door on right; 3 windows, cambered-headed, with 2-light
casements. Rear: house has a 16-pane sash to each floor of right
bay; outshut to left bay with tiny small-pane window at eaves and
pantile-roofed lean-to beyond. Mill has triple-arched exit of
sluice and mill race on right and 2-light small-pane casement
windows, 2 on ground floor with door at left end, 3 on 1st floor
with small window inserted to right of central Window; end of tie
rod. Right return of mill: on right, keyed elliptical-arched
doorway with double board door; board door above with window to
left as rear; in gable the circular ends of 3 tie-rods and a
keyed round-arched window with small-pane glazing. Similar gable
window to left return of mill, the left-hand side of the gable
being hung with Welsh slates. Interior of mill: iron columns
support cross-beams on lowest floor at right end; on next floor
cross-beams are of very large scantling with run-out chamfers,
wide floor-boards; in attic, 5 collared principal rafter roof
trusses, the collars bolted on, 3 tiers of staggered butt
purlins, replacement rafters (late C20). Boarded and studded
silos to rear.
Mill machinery survives well including broad iron undershot water
wheel with wooden gearing to 2 sets of stones, one set removed,
and also to other machinery; crane by Armfield of Southampton;
roller mill for grist by Armfield with red stencilling; garner
floor has flour dresser by Gardner of Gloucester, smaller flour
dresser by Robinson of Rochdale, corn cleaner by Armfield and
corn bin; in attic, pulley wheel and chains for sack hoist for
which there are trapdoors on each floor. A fulling and tucking
mill stood on the site until 1823, when the present mill was
rebuilt; it ceased to operate on a commercial basis in 1975.
