SO 38 NW; BISHOPS CASTLE,

Farmhouse. Circa early C17 remodelled C18 or C19. Timber frame, stone and brick, roughcast
rendered. Slate roof with gabled ends. Gable end and rear lateral stack, S end stack with later
brick shaft.
PLAN: Probably originally a 2-room and through passage plan, the left room the hall with a
lateral stack at the back, the right-hand room possibly originally unheated but now with a gable
end stack. The putative through passage has been blocked, the hall subdivided and an outshut
has been built at the left (N) end. The front wall appears to have been rebuilt forward to form
a deeper plan.
EXTERIOR: 1 storey and attic. Asymmetrical W front. Large 16-pane sash on right, smaller
2-light casement under eaves to left of centre and 3-light casement on ground floor to left with
glazing bars. Lean-to outshut on left (N) end with plank door to left and casements above.
Rear (E) has large lateral stack on right with truncated shaft and lean-to ovens on either side;
Small 2-light casements on left. S gable end has gabled porch with semi-circular fanlight and
plank door.
INTERIOR: Right (S) room has chamfered axial beams, unchamfered joists and fireplace with
pilastered chimneypiece with moulded shelf Left-hand (N) room has chamfered axial beam and
chamfered joists with straight cut stops and fireplace with C19 brick oven and copper. Jowled
wall post in N end wall supporting what is claimed to be sleeping platform. Wall framing and
large purlin exposed in chamber.
