5/91 The Grange

G.V. II

House. 1767, c1825. Red brick, chequered red and cream brick, coursed
ironstone rubble, pantile roof with single gable stack and tall central ridge
stack on C18 east range, and slate hipped roofs with 3 lateral brick
stacks on C19 west range. East service wing with lower north, east and
most of south walls of coursed ironstone rubble with red brick above. Doorway
in east end of north front with C18 doorcase with bracketed hood, rectangular
overlight and 6 panelled door. To the east, an early C19 glazing bar sash
window with a partially fixed C19 window to the east above. Datestone
inscribed "M.W.L. 1767 J.L." re-set in C19 range next to door. West range
of red and cream chequered brick with 2 storey, 3 bay south front. Central
doorway with rectangular fanlight with margin lights and 6 panelled door is
flanked by single glazing bar sashes with 3 above. The ground floor windows
have splayed stone lintels. Good quality interior. Double pile plan of
west range intact with elegant early C19 staircase with carved tread ends.
Beamed ceilings in C18 service wing.
