1811 ST HILDA'S TERRACE

Nos 1 to 25 (consec) form a long terrace of late C18 date, forming an important
group. Dr Young in his "History of Whitby" (1817) calls it the finest street
in Whitby, adding that "it forms but one row of houses; but all of them
are beautiful and some magnificent".

Composition of 6 houses. 2 storeys and attics in brick. Parapets. Reroofed
in slate, except for Nos 3 and 4. No 1 has 2 gabled dormers, cornice and
parapet, One flat dormer to No 2. Enriched pedimented doorcases to Nos
1 and 2 with fluted pilasters, No 2 having added early C19 wood porch with
shaped lead roof, 6 panel doors. 3 windows each, double-hung sashes. Nos
3 and 4 have Ionic pilastered pedimented doorways with fanlights and 6-panel
doors. Central dentilled cornice and pediment with enriched oval plaque.
Nos 5 and 6 have plain doorways, stone arches. No 5 has a pantile roof
with one dormer. No 6 is built up higher, slate roof, 2 gabled dormers,
later cornice. 4 and 6 panel doors. NMR.

Nos 1 to 25 (consec), Gardens Wall and Gatepiers form a group.
