Funicular railway station and former temperance
restaurant/refreshment house, now guest house. 1892. By G. Croydon
Marks. Whitewashed brick with plain-tile roof and end stacks. 3
storeys, the station being under the guest house. Central entrance
with 2 orders of pilasters either side part-glazed double doors with
overlight and keystone. The overlight has "Cliff Railway Station" in
gilt letters. To left a curving flight of steps leads above and forms
the beginning of the Stoneway steps. Brick and stone balustrade and
pierced stone balustrade. Guest house is a 5-window range of sashes
with glazing bars and brick segmental arches to ground floor. Central
doorway with 2-leaf part glazed door. Rear is jettied out over the
railway and has a pair of part-glazed entrances to the waiting room
leading from the railway, which runs in a cutting to the upper station
(q.v.).
